Description
Can the city remove the turning lane here and widen the sidewalks and add parking? It is impossible to safely use a sidewalk on this street because it is so narrow and lots of cars are parked on the sidewalk. everyone is always complaining about parking. get rid of the turning lane. It’s dangerous for pedestrians anyway. I noticed this frequently on Journal Square that the sidewalks are super narrow and there’s a turning lane. It seems like we are prioritizing cars over the safety of pedestrians in this entire ward. Sidewalks aren't wide enough for two people to pass each other without one walking into the street.

1. Crossing Tonnelle at Dey St and Van Winkle is incredibly dangerous. Install RRFB at Tonnelle and Dey and concrete bumpouts and concrete pedestrian islands at Tonnelle and Dey and Tonnelle and Van Winkle.
2: Install bumpout on SW corner of Tonnelle and Newark to slow drivers that are turning right from EB Newark onto SB Tonnelle and shorten pedestrian crossing distance. This will also improve visibility for drivers who are making this turn and whose view may be blocked by the building at 845 Newark.
3: Eliminate left turn lanes at Tonnelle and Broadway to allow for wider sidewalks. Wider sidewalks would also allow for trees to be planted, which will help prevent drivers from parking on the sidewalks.
4. Add crosswalk on north side of intersection of Tonnelle and Broadway.
5. Add HAWK or traffic signal at Tonnelle and Pavonia or Tonnelle and Magnolia. It’s currently very difficult to cross here and a lot of people use Magnolia to access the PATH. There is a very long stretch of Tonnelle between Broadway and Kennedy without a traffic signal so it’s dangerous for pedestrians to cross at Pavonia or Magnolia.
6. Plant trees for the entire stretch, which will serve as a physical barrier to stop drivers from parking on sidewalks but especially plant them at the used car dealership at Broadway and Tonnelle since they use the sidewalk as an extension of their parking lot almost every day.
